about

I never mourned my dad's sudden death in January 2011. One morning in 2022, this song came from that unknown space between the before and the after. It's an honest song dedicated to my mom, whose love is an all-powerful ally, and to my dad, whose life embodied a simple devotion to opening doors.

lyrics

What's on the front page today
Pointless leaders
Homeless teachers
Grown men running from shame

I wanna scrub myself clean
Deeper and deeper
Til the water runs clear
And I can recognize me

But i wonder who my dad would be
When would he stand on the fence
Would it be hard to connect
Or would he become my best friend

He was a song and dance man
Art and romance
Love and distance
Charm and patience and chance

Those were the golden days
Desert reaches
Hot sand beaches
The threat and the mercy of waves

The call came when i'd been away
So i answered it on the last ring
He took his own life with the gun
And that was the end of the dream

So then it comes to the end of my life
That funny point of view
There is no fog, i can see very clear
A canyon that i look into

Cause I died once when I was a kid
In a hospital room with four beds
They opened our eyes to the dark
Where we named the stars in our heads

One nearly drowned in a lake
One was poisoned
Another one seized up
One just swallowed in vain

They called us the four horsemen kids
Bird-like nurses
Bible verses
Foreheads wet by kisses

Who claims the children of death
Mothers with trouble with breath
Then I woke up inside a changed room
And she was right there on the bench
I begged her to come pick me up
So she wrestled the hospital mess
And claimed me in her mother's breast

So then it comes to the end of my life
That funny point of view
There is no fog, i can see very clear
A canyon that i look into

Yes i will have
I will lose
I will wish I knew what's never known
And all I can say is something my dad said
To me a lifetime ago

You're gonna find your own way
And we may not always agree
But i'll always be proud of you, son
So why don't you try, and just see
