Nearer is (poet, Lainey Guddat)

from Ask for Dust by David Plell

/

lyrics

Nearer is

where we
peel garlic

hands cleaning
steel pots,
streets stealing
bright flowers
in crops

where we
slip knives
in hot water

knives rainless
curtains,
gardenlike
we peel away

light smells
on our eyelids
as sun
on steel

we lay
tracks, crop
mountains
and rooftops
with snow,
rails with
freight cars
the size of
leaves, I

hold you
nearer now

than a season,
than a whistle
praying in the dark.

"Nearer is" is a poem the wonderful Lainey Guddat wrote for this project. Most of the clinks, ticks, and chimes are Lainey moving around between the kitchen and the living room in my living space in Seattle.
